Sonic Colors Ultimate in Preview: So colorful is the HD remake

If you have been a long fans of Sonic and his friends, you may have played "Sonic Colors". In 2010, the colorful racing fun with the iconic hedgehog appeared and enjoyed pretty much popularity. At that time, you can only play the 3D-Jump'n Run Platformer on the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DS, but that will change now:

On September 7, 2021 Sonic also jumps on the Sony consoles through the colorful world. You can gamble the game on PlayStation 4 and try backward compatibility on your PS5. So far, we had no way to deduct it on the latest console generation. However, we suspect that you benefit from the PLAYSTATION 5 mainly from the power and thus shortened loading times.

An interstellar amusement park

In "Sonic Colors: Ultimate" everything revolves around Sonic and his eternal fight against Dr. Eggman. The crazy antagonist has once again implemented a delocated plan into action, which harms numerous creatures. His latest idea: An interstellar amusement park with numerous attractions! What sounds like a lot of recreational fun, turns out to be slavery in closer inspection.

Behind every great attraction are slaves that Dr. med. Eggman captured. This alien breed, the so-called WISPs, wants to free Sonic with the help of his friends and therefore races with the highest speed and some tricks in the luggage through the colorful glowing worlds of the amusement park.

Galactic color sea

Already after the first seconds of our preview session was clear: This game becomes a color explosion. The different worlds in the amusement park of Dr. med. Eggman were already very colorful and crazy - thanks to HD polishing, everything is still more colorful, even brighter and even more luminous. When exploring the individual paths you will come across a sweet mountain, which is filled with lubrications. In the aquarium park, however, countless pools and sea creatures await you, which are definitely worth a second look.

If you have played the game in 2010 in his original version, you certainly knows the happy soundtrack. Even in the HD remake, the songs will be heard again, if you sprout through the individual zones of the galactic amusement park. We kept ourselves in the preview session especially in the Tropical Resort - the many palm trees and the rousing soundtrack there have put us directly in a holiday mood. Just missed a cocktail!

The pretty reprocessing of the graphic runs, at least at our first insight, unfortunately not completely through the whole game. Thus, the intermediate sequences are quite nice to look at, but almost a bit of old baking compared to the colorful levels of the game. You could just call it nostalgic. Possibly smaller graphic inconsistencies do not fall so much because they run most of the time with an affinity of the world to create the level as possible in a best time as possible.

Quality-of-Life enhancements

So that you have fun with the colorful Sonic game in 2021, the developers have also laughed at the gameplay. The controller has been refined so that its Sonic can accompany as precisely as possible by numerous loopings and abysses. This has worked well in our test session except for an exception: At one point, however, we have shown us different buttons for running an action what led to that we have time and again just everything to see what happens.

The attacking of the opponents and charging the speed, then with full speed through loopings to nozzles, but has worked fantastic and looked great. If you liberate many wisps during the game, they also grant you crazy skills with which Sonic's henchmen of Dr. Eggman can do. At some point, they even allow you to slide through massive objects!

Net new is also the "Rival Rush" mode in which you get a very special opponent: Metal Sonic! This fight is not for beginners and requires a bit of concentration, but it's worth it! At a victory, she receives great rewards that would not like to miss her.

"Sonic Colors: Ultimate": (K) a beginner game?

If you've never had a 3D Platformer in the hand yet, and otherwise playing with this kind do not have much on the hat, the colorful bustle in the interstellar amusement park could become a small challenge. Here the saying meets: "Easy to Learn, Hard to Master" in any case! After all, Sonic does not do so many complicated stunts: he jumps, he runs, he joins. A few more skills are actually learned quite quickly. Nevertheless, some passages in the individual worlds are really hard. At least if you want to achieve a good score and (or) time.

To give newcomers of the genre a few help, the developers have incorporated question mark icons that can easily activate them in the different levels. They give you important information in a short form and explain the control of Sonic's skills. Anyone who already knows very well can easily pass them by nozzles. But right now is the problem: If you are not so practiced yet, you may run past the icon and does not come back in the worst case to activate it. There only helps try out yourself or restart the level completely to read the mini tutorials really all.

One more round, please!

There are always different ways that you can get to the destination. Sometimes it goes up, elsewhere far down. Each path carries risks and numerous golden rings that applies. Some of them are faster to do, on other routes there is more to see - if you really want to experience everything, you have to play every level several times. Since they are usually only a few minutes, that's no problem. The playback value is also very high, because the bright-colored world keeps many surprises ready and thanks to the enormous speed, the hurdle is really not up again.
