Emotional to the end: the 12 best ends in video games

Video games usually have a goal on which they work. When playing with story, this is often an emotional end to accompany us for years. Which ends have impressed us mostly most, we run in this list for you. Two references in advance:

The following list is based on the opinions of the Video games editors. If you find another end of video games even more memorable than our selection, then writes us in the comments.

ATTENTION SPOILER : In this article you can expect spoiler to Shadow of the Colossus, RDR 1 + 2, Bioshock Infinite, Halo Reach, Transistor, The Last of US 1 + 2, The Walking Dead, Tacoma, Uncharted 4, Journey and What Remains of Edith Finch.

Shadow of the Colossus

  • Release: 2005
  • Platform: PS2, PS3, PS4 (Remake)

Hannes: When it comes to good ends, whether in video games or films, is often the talk of crazy twists. Movements in the story that put the complete, previous experience on the head. And with a little wink, you could say that Shadow of the Colossus has such a twist, except that we see him earlier before the end. However, he will only be better.

As a reminder: In Shadow of the Colossus, we have to depart 16 colosse to bring our partner from a coma-like sleep. That's at least our intention. In fact, however, in a forbidden country, we will lose a manipulative deity to free them from a magical prison. Every dead colossus strengthens the presence of the evil in the body of the protagonist.

In the beginning, this is all unclear and hunt the giants, without thinking big about it. Only later becomes clear that we always act as aggressor and the colossi only defend himself against us. We guess that something is wrong here, but what else should we do? There is only one way. Every further victory increases the guilt and this one thought in the back of the head is getting louder: that will not go well here. The hope dies most recently, but she dies. So also at the end of Shadow of the Colossus.

Red Dead Redemption

  • Release: 2010
  • Platform: PS3, Xbox One, PC

Hannes: A few years ago, the thrilling end of Arthur Morgan's story was on everyone's lips. It can be easily forgotten how impressively the first Red Dead Redemption came to an end. Although the final did not come out of nothing here, yet the inglorious end of John Marston's complete history adds another stamp.

After putting pressure and blackmailed by the government for a long time, to detect his old gang colleagues and turn them off, Marston will be betrayed in the end. The complete game is about the chance for a peaceful life with our family, a definitive escape from the atria of the past. We will be forced into our old, violent life last time so we can finally leave it behind.

After completing our mission, the criminal life of once gains us anyway. Also John Marston does not remain unpunished and will be shot down on his own farm of a group of government officials Brutal. It never went for absolution, repentance or justice. It was only one and alone revenge and for power. As soon as we have no more benefit, we will be hunted as well as we hunted our old friends.

Bioshock Infinite

  • Release : 2013
  • Platform : PS3, Xbox 360, PC

Tobi : Actually, after the Twist in the story of the first Bioshock, I could have suspected that Bioshock Infinite would have a little sophisticated for his final. But what came then blissed me - and many others probably also - from the socks and at the same time belongs to the brain-tightest and most spectacular resolutions of a story that I have experienced so far in video games.

As a Booker DeWitt we have to look for the young Elizabeth in the Wolkstadt Columbia and free them from there, but then get it there as the founder of the city and self-proclaimed prophets Zackary Comstock, which is quickly built as a villain. In the end, however, it turns out that we are comstock myself and Elizabeth our daughter. The game explains that with parallel universes where versions of the characters have developed into different directions and overlapping at certain points.

The long sequence and the thoughts behind them are still much more complex, it was written in the network whole negotiations over the end and until today there are speculations and theories about the end of Bioshock Infinite, which has laid out in me as long as hardly any other final a game.

Halo Reach

  • Release : 2010
  • Platform : Xbox 360

Tobi : For all Halo connoisseurs Reach has the "Titanic problem". Because from the beginning you know how the story will end, namely with the destruction - or better "glazing" - the name-based planet. However, how developers bungie stages history and, above all, concludes, makes me a bit emotional in retrospect and get goose bumps.

With the Noble Team we have to fight in Halo: Reach back the attack by the Covenant aliens on the military planet, but stand against the huge rush but quickly on lost posts. Gradually dying team members, the remaining remaining in the end but still to bring the Ki Cortana to the ship Pillar of Autumn and enable them to escape into space before we as noble Six in the last playable sequence in a hopeless fight against countless Covenant fall.

And so the circle closes, because REACH is a prequel to Halo. Through the use of the Noble Team, the history of the Master Chief-Halos became possible, which in the end was once again scolded and stored with great music. Definitely a shooter end that I would not expect in this force and class.

Transistor

  • Release : 2014
  • Platform : PS4, iOS, Nintendo Switch

Warning : Disturbing content - transistor deals with topics as suicide in some co-missions, but without whale or glorifying them. Anyone who could interact disturbed to the purchase of the game better.

RAE : Meanwhile, it is a running gag in the Video games team that I hate our test to transistor (who was created before my time). Background is that I believe that he does not meet the great, intelligent story of the bastion successor. Or the end of transistor, which is the reason why this list exists. Because I love the end of transistor, although I rarely did the final of a story so hurt.

Okay yes, the way to this perfect end is not always easy. The history around the silenced singer Red, her talking sword transistor and the mysterious organization Camerata, which believes her after life is confused, complex and not always easy to understand. However, this never disturbed me, because in the center of transistor always stood for me the relationship between Red and its title sword. We first meet him at the beginning of the game when she pulls it out of the body of an unknown man who sacrificed his life for her and whose soul is now trapped in the weapon.

It quickly becomes clear that the two know well, even if we only learn fragments of their relationship based on the monologist of the transistor that reacts to Reds actions. He is her constant companion, her confidant and her weapon in the fight against the camerata and a voice of reason.

The true nature of their relationship is clear in the last few minutes of the game and finally in the credits. The end of transistor (which could actually be a happy ending, it manages to defeat their enemies and to save their city) leads us back to the beginning, back to the dead body of the unknown. While we think that Red has returned to say goodbye to your friend before leaving the city, it will quickly realize that this is not your intention.

After reaching your destination and saved the city, Red Your Own Life decides to finish and sacrifice your soul to the transistor to be united again with your lover. This becomes clear when we hear the desperate pleading of the weapon trying to dissuade them - without success. She takes the life in the same way as it was taken to be united again with him. In credits we see the two united again, happy.

Usually it would be difficult for me, a game that ends with a suicide to praise or designate such an end as perfect. Transistor creates it for me, but to meet the right sound, to create a bitter sweet and as painful and perfect end.

Tacoma

  • Release : 2017
  • Platform : PS4, Xbox One

RAE : Tacoma is in many ways an interesting game, which for me in the category "I do not really like, but you should still play all". The reason for this is, above all, the absolutely perfect end that creates the difficult balance act between "a good degree" and "a good start". Not that a second part of Tacoma had ever been planned, but the end tempts to lose in "what if" thoughts to lose, which in my eyes only the best ends of stories can.

In the follow-up administer of the Gone Home-makers, we undertake us in the near future on an abandoned room station Tacoma, from which we should mount the data of the highly developed AI Odin. With the Board of Tacoma, with the help of a 3D surveillance system, we can track the life of the crew members and gradually puzzle events that have provided that the station is now exited.

Gradually, such a passive thriller blends around the sinister transforms of powerful companies, which do not back in front of murder. At the center of these machinations on Tacoma stands Odin - but not as we might have suspected. Instead of putting on the evil-ki trope, FullBright tells the story of an artificial intelligence that opposes her Creator to save human lives.

The biggest twist at the end is when we learn that it is not how evidently accepted our task is to create Odin Aka the "evil Ki" out of the way, but to save them. For the crew, which has saved ODIN, in turn commissioned the "Ai Liberation Front" (a group that commits to KI rights), ODIN and bring safe - if ODIN agrees. The special thing at the end of Tacoma is therefore not only simply the twist and the break with well-known tropes, but above all the implication that artificial intelligence in the world of the game as a living creature with its own will be perceived. This opens up a completely new universe with new opportunities that previously only to guess and from which I would like to see more.
