NBA News: Juwan Howard not to head coach
Juwan Howard, ex-NBA professional and currently coach of the University of Michigan, recently rejected an offer from the Los Angeles Lakers, who are looking for a new head coach. This reports Adrian Wojnarowski from ESPN. Instead, he decided to spend another two years with his Alma Mater.
Although it did not make a formal offer, WOWAR had signaled his interest, his candidacy would have quickly gone to the next level. Howard has already stood in the field together with Laker's GM Rob Pelinka (Am College) and franchise star LeBron James. In the past, he had decided against NBA offers and instead to stay in Michigan, where his sons Jace and Jett will be junior or Freshman in the coming season.
His time as a player (double champion with the Miami Heat) and his six years as heat assistant had already provided a lot of interest in other NBA teams in the past. In 2019 he interviewed the Lakers for the job, and last year, Celtics President Brad Stevens asked for a successor for himself on the coaching bench. Howard canceled.
Instead, the Lakers now want to go into talks with three other candidates, as already reported in addition to ESPN Shams Charania from the athletic. This is the current assistant coach of the Milwaukee Bucks Darvin Ham, Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson and the former head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers Terry Stotts. After Frank Vogel was released, six candidates were interviewed as potential successors. Team owner Jeanie Buss is also to take part in the upcoming interviews.
